Stranger Things: The Experience

Stepping Into the Upside Down

Overview

TechMDinc worked on the AVC design packages, production, and integration for Stranger Things: The Experience.

In 2016, Netflix opened a digital portal to Stranger Things, captivating audiences worldwide. But soon, they wanted fans to do more than just watch the eerie events unfold in Hawkins, Indiana—they wanted them to experience it firsthand.

TechMDinc was tasked with bringing this world to life in an immersive, never-before-seen way. In collaboration with Netflix, Fever, and Mycotoo, our team designed the AVC systems that powered the creative vision behind Stranger Things: The Experience. Beyond design, we also managed procurement, production, and system integration, ensuring every technical element aligned perfectly to create a seamless, spine-chilling adventure.

Our team played a key role in the deployment and strike of the experience worldwide, helping transport guests into the supernatural mysteries of Hawkins through cutting-edge audio, video, and control systems. With precision engineering and immersive storytelling, TechMDinc helped turn Stranger Things: The Experience into a global phenomenon.

Project Team:

The Challenge: Designing for a Global Touring Experience

Unlike a traditional fixed-location attraction, Stranger Things: The Experience required TechMDinc to design a fully tourable show—one that could seamlessly adapt to both national and international venues. This introduced new challenges we hadn’t encountered before, requiring us to create a system that was both scalable and flexible across multiple locations.

To meet this challenge, we developed four separate touring kits, each carefully modified to comply with regional power requirements, wireless communication regulations, and other country-specific variations. Compounding the complexity, this all had to be achieved within a tight production window—all while navigating pandemic-era supply chain disruptions and logistical restrictions.

Through strategic planning, technical innovation, and problem-solving, TechMDinc successfully delivered a touring experience that brought Stranger Things to life for audiences worldwide.

“Just wanted to say thank you for making this happen, we really appreciate you guys being flexible and available to support the show.”

The Solution: Resourcefulness & Expert Support

To ensure Stranger Things: The Experience could tour successfully, TechMDinc meticulously mocked up and recommended the best equipment suited for a traveling production. Our team worked tirelessly to identify gear that met both technical and logistical requirements, ensuring consistency across all locations.

With global supply chain challenges limiting equipment availability, we expanded our efforts—sourcing components from around the world to keep production on track. Additional staff was brought on to assist with procurement and production, ensuring every touring kit was fully equipped and ready for deployment.

Beyond system design, TechMDinc also deployed with each tour, providing on-site integration support during installation. We also conducted comprehensive training for Fever’s dedicated touring staff, empowering them to operate and relocate the show independently—ensuring a seamless, high-quality experience for audiences worldwide.

Innovation and Impact: Innovating with Facial Detection Technology

One of the most exciting technological breakthroughs of Stranger Things: The Experience was the development of an advanced facial-capturing system. TechMDinc’s programming team designed a cutting-edge detection system capable of recognizing and capturing faces—even when guests wore hats, glasses, or masks.

This innovation played a key role in enhancing the interactive storytelling within the attraction. The system would discreetly capture guest photos early in the experience and later integrate them into a dynamic presentation, making each visitor feel like they had stepped directly into the world of Stranger Things.

By pushing the boundaries of facial recognition and interactive engagement, TechMDinc helped create a deeply personalized and immersive experience that left a lasting impression on every guest.
